Abstract

Fluctuating lists on industry sites such as Publishers Weekly rank MFA programs and thousands of agents and publishing houses solicit from MFA programs each year. However, many MFA students and graduates struggle to reconcile the nature of their degrees with the realities of the publishing industry. What are MFA programs currently doing to prepare their students for the realities of the publishing industry? Where is there the most room for improvement in their preparation (i.e., what aspects of the publishing industry do they remain unprepared for)?
