From PICA (Portland Institute for Contemporary Art)

"The City Dance of Lawrence and Anna Halprin was a performance journey in four acts, set in the world-renowned sequence of fountain plazas designed and built between 1963 and 1970 by Lawrence Halprin and Associates in Portland's first urban renewal district.

"The recipient of Oregon's 2008 American Masterpieces project funded by the National Endowment of the Arts and the Oregon Arts Commission, City Dance was auspiciously timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the agency that built the district and the plazas, the Portland Development Commission.

"Conceived, curated and performed as the result of a collaboration between musician Ron Blessinger/Third Angle New Music, historian and writer Randy Gragg, and dance artist Linda K. Johnson, City Dance was an unprecedented blend of architecture, music, dance, and historic preservation. With the addition of choreographers Linda Austin, Tere Mathern and Cydney Wilkes to the collaborative team, City Dance went on to involve over 50 dancers, 100 musicians, and over 1000 citizens of Portland who came out on Sept. 14th, 2008 to celebrate the history and future of some of its most distinctive civic spaces."
