Abstract

Executive Summary The project’s goal is to create a model to help prospect Master’s students who would be majoring in Computer Science select a graduate school in Computer Science. The paper proposes a hierarchical decision model, which has been discussed in the Decision Making in Engineering and Technology Management Course at Portland State University to select a university from various viable universities. Evaluating from several criteria, the user would apply the pairwise comparison method to weigh all seven criteria. As users complete the method the Hierarchical Decision Model (HDM) would be applied to weigh each of their alternatives versus each of the criteria. A computer program based on a database of twelve preliminarily selected universities was built to help the user make a decision. The database employed by the program reflects our group’s preferences in terms of attribute data for each university, which we collected from such sources as Peterson’s educational portal [2]. The program allows the user perform the selection process by implementing pairwise comparison method to weight seven subjective criteria we perceive as the key concern for majority of students. The program would yield the score to each criteria, showing how significant each criteria judged by user’s perception. With HDM we are able to put universities on a scale from the most preferred university to the most insignificant one. The project report contains the description of the decision making model, collection process and definitions of working data, as well as the user manual.
