Abstract
Why has mental illness in our children let alone society increased so significantly? In this paper I am doing a lit review to understand the need for a structured lesson plan of Social Emotional Learning (S.E.L.) and incorporating some techniques of social cognitive therapies for our children. This will be understood by comparing social cognitive therapies in Schizophrenia treatment that rewires healthy neural pathways from miswired neural pathways that are not functional in schizophrenia and the impact on a person with schizophrenia having difficulties to integrate into society while coping with their illness. I will do this by analyzing Theory of Mind’s (ToM) development and treatment in people suffering with neurocognitive issues like schizophrenia and then the change that occurs in children's behavior after learning S.E.L., which is similar in the fundamental techniques used to treat schizophrenia with social cognitive therapies. I will also compare the different studies that have been done on S.E.L. to establish the relationship between social cognitive therapies and SEL in how the person develops empathy, ToM, and integration into society as a productive member of society, while understanding the help that S.E.L. develops in children's academic performance as well as teacher and child relationships.
