Program Description

The University of the Pacific started an institutional repository, Scholarly Commons, at the end of 2016. Prior to this, theses/dissertations (T/Ds) had been submitted to ProQuest starting in 1960 and prior to that the University collected print copies in the Library starting in 1912. The print collection of T/Ds at Pacific was 3,188 in December 2016.

The goals starting in 2017 were as follows

  1. Duplicate all current ProQuest ETDs in to the IR with restricted access
  2. Set up the ProQuest submission form moving forwards to gain permission from students to upload to the IR
  3. Digitize all print copies in the Library and upload to the IR with restricted access
  4. Reduce the number of print copies in the Library to 1 of each T/D
  5. Cancel the requirement for students to submit a print copy to the Library

This presentation will provide concrete steps on how repository staff set up a ProQuest feed to the IR in conjunction with the Graduate School, pulled ETDs out of ProQuest to put in the IR, and digitized print copies with student workers and PT support from several Library departments. Hopefully some of the workflows we developed will be helpful to others looking to replicate this process on small budgets and with limited human resources.
