Abstract
Modeling of soil at full scale is often impractical and expensive. Centrifuge tests allow for hyper-gravity conditions where scaling laws allow for model behavior to capture full scale behavior. Centrifuges allow models to constructed and tested with faster turnarounds than full scale experimentation. Cone penetration tests (CPT) – a common geotechnical site investigation method – were preformed with centrifuge modeling to improve interpretation of CPT data for a larger range of soils. Large-scale centrifuge testing with CPT of known initial conditions allows for research on non-standard soils. Hyper-gravity effects of centrifuge tests allow for complex, cost-effective geotechnical models. The CGM at UC Davis has collaborated with PSU to preform centrifuge tests with a variety of different soils.
