Abstract
Graphene coating was chosen because of its chemical inertness and high corrosion resistance, which help prevent rust and surface damage from accumulating on the steel. The graphene was coated on 8620 steel using chemical vapor deposition (CVD), a method that grows thin uniform layers of graphene on the surface. A microcapillary system was designed and assembled to test corrosion resistance, allowing measurements on multiple isolated areas of a sample for greater accuracy. An inexpensive, easily replaceable 800μm diameter pipette tip was used as the microcapillary tip to seal off each area for testing. Both graphene coated and uncoated 8620 steel samples were tested to directly compare their performance and evaluate the effectiveness of the coatings in resisting corrosion.
