The term “biotechnology” frequently leads to misunderstandings, however the definition explored in this paper refers to the use of living organisms or their products to improve human health and its environment; this concept ranges from simple fermentation processes to genetic engineering. The biotechnology Industry has rapidly developed over the last three decades, nevertheless, this industry is still immature and is facing many critical issues. Such issues are the origin of questions like: How should Scientific Technology be commercialized? How can Universities and the Industry partner with one another? What should the role of government be and when should it intervene? etc.
This emerging industry is not easy to analyze. There is no concrete answer of what could have been done differently because the industry is currently still developing. However, the new companies must consider marketing and licensing strategies to avoid costly failures in the process of releasing new products.
The biotechnology industry has its unique characteristics that should be considered. As with the dotcoms companies, the emerging industry is developing its characteristics, making it difficult to apply patterns that may work in other industries. We have identified key variables that the biotechnology leaders have to carefully judge as time & cost for product development, portfolio management, alliances, and market risk analysis.
