Historic Black Newspapers of Portland

Advocate

In 1903, husband and wife team E.D. and Beatrice Cannady began publication of The Advocate. Founded by the Cannadys and nine other men, including Portland Hotel employees, the paper quickly became the primary source of news for the African American community that included coverage of both “black and white issues.” The Cannadys also had a part in finding the Portland chapter of the N.A.A.C.P. The paper ceased publication in 1936, but remains an intimate representation of African American lives in Portland at the beginning of the 20th century.
