Abstract
This paper asks a basic question of where manufacturing firms should concentrate their efforts and activities which essentially should be a part of defining their mission. Many of the concepts and issues presented are in general terms describing the struggles manufacturing firms have on whether to continue producing major components for their systems or the end-products alone. More specifically, the paper addresses the question of "what can be done in a large end-product firm or semiconductor merchant to increase the value of chip fabrication?".
