Abstract
This paper takes a look at intellectual property and what problems and issues are raised by the lack of knowledge engineers have in this area. Recommendations are made as to how companies and engineers can benefit by gaining a basic understanding of current issues and standard practices in intellectual property. It is hypothesized that gaining a basic understanding, companies will benefit by the ability of engineers to more readily recognize when steps need to be taken to protect what they are working on, and will also recognize situations of infringement.
