Abstract
Many companies conduct business in defense related areas. Several companies have tried to capitalize on the innovations they created for defense customers, and have entered the commercial market, with mixed success. This report provides background of the evolution of the defense industry, and factors influencing the transfer of technology from military to non-military and commercial markets. Case studies are presented for four companies to identify the management techniques employed by these companies in their pursuit to capitalize on their defense products, innovation and knowledge in other markets. The report concludes by analyzing the implications of the case studies and provides suggestions for future commercialization projects.
