Cross-functional teams -- Effect of communication on, Teams in the workplace -- Management, Communication in organizations

Abstract

Cross-functional teams are commonly found in a variety of industries. Cross-functional teams are defined as a group of people who have different areas of expertise and are all working towards a common goal. The term “cross-functional” inherently implies that functional silos, to some varying degree, exist within the organization. Cross-functional teams in the private sector may consist of resources from engineering, marketing, sales, operations, and finance while cross-functional teams in the academic sector may consist of resources from different programs entirely or even resources from the same department but with different specialties within the same discipline. As is true for most types of teams, communication can be a key component of team success. For cross-functional teams in particular, communication, effective or dysfunctional, conflict-ridden or harmonious, can be a leading indicator of whether or not the team will ultimately achieve their common goal.

As students of communication and team building and working engineers in varying industries, the authors of this study have valuable first hand experiences with cross-functional team communication. As such, the authors aim to leverage these experiences along with findings from literature in order to determine the true impact of communication on team success in this semi-empirical study.
