Abstract
Organizations are complex systems that at times can seem intractable. While there are no easy solutions, systems theory adds another set of tools and lenses to help work out solutions. This paper looks at research in problem ontology, systems perspectives and systems archetypes to gain insight into the nature of organizational problems. The terminology of diachronic residue is introduced which synthesizes ideas from other works in an attempt to gain insight into organization identity, values, vision, and perceptions and their relation to organizational inertia.
