Abstract
About 3/4 of all volcanic activity on Earth is underwater, but there is limited knowledge of how they behave in aquatic environments. Previous research mainly looked at plumes that stay underwater. This project aims to determine the conditions that allow underwater volcanic plumes to pierce the water’s surface. By building a rig and testing it under both normal and microgravity conditions, we aim to improve the understanding and modeling of submarine eruptions and potential hazards. Additionally, the rig is designed with scalability in mind, allowing for future additions such as a system to dispense particles to study more complex plume dynamics.
