Astronomy -- Laboratory exercises, Macintosh (Computer), Project CLEA

Abstract

Project CLEA -- CONTEMPORARY LABORATORY EXPERIENCES IN ASTRONOMY -- develops laboratory exercises that illustrate modern astronomical techniques using digital data and color images.

These Labs were developed for Windows, but the authors have bottled them for Silicon Macintosh computers.

Description

Original files at: http://public.gettysburg.edu/~marschal/clea/

Given the evanescent nature of computer applications that work with changing operating systems, we have included three sets of bottles for Silicon Macintosh computers.

As you run any of them, a window will pop up either saying “Please Enter Drive Letter of CDROM” or it will be entirely blank except for the “OK” and “Cancel” buttons at the bottom. In either case, simply hit the “Cancel” button and the program will continue to the login screen.

The first set consists of freestanding Macintosh applications within VIREO.zip, SolarRotation2.zip, and XMMLab.zip.

Since you did not download these applications from the App Store (we have not yet gotten them installed there), MacOS will give them a "com.apple.Quarantine" attribute that triggers the message: '"SolarRotation2.app" is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash.' and likewise for VIREO.app, and XMMLab.app.

Click "Cancel" on this message window and open the Terminal application. Therein type:

xattr -d -r com.apple.quarantine

including a space after "quarantine" and then drag the SolarRotation2.app onto that line in the Terminal and hit return.

The next time you double click on the SolarRotation2.app it will begin with two requests: the first from "Sikarugir" (the program we used to create these bottles) '"Sikarugir" would like access to files in your desktop' and a similar one such as '"SolarRotation2" would ...' that you should Allow. But it will not yet run. The third time you double click on the app it will open correctly.

The second set consists of bottles that must be run within the free application Whisky whose creator has indicated that he will no longer actively maintain it.

From the File menu, choose “Import bottle,” and choose the 251B8865-239B-4526-B485-F63B9E1B8B83 subfolder of the expanded Whisky.zip file.

Each time you select VIREO within Whisky and click “Run,” an open-window will come up showing the contents of the “drive_c” folder, and you will have to double-click on the “Program Files (x86)” subfolder, the “CLEA” subfolder of that, the “VIREO” subfolder of that, and finally on the “CLEA_VEO.exe” executable.

The XMM and Solar Rotation Lab executables also reside in subfolders of the same “CLEA” subfolder.

The third set consists of bottles that must be run within the application CrossOver that requires a fee in excess of $70 after the 14-day trial period. This application is actively maintained as of 2025, so this is the backup plan if the above two versions eventually fail.

From the Bottle menu, choose “Import bottle Archive,” and choose VIREO.cxarchive, Solar Rotation2.cxarchive, and XMMLab.cxarchive in turn. Simply double-click on the resulting VIREO, Solar Rotation2, or XMMLab to run it.
