Abstract

Chapter 21. In this chapter, we use Carter G. Woodson's “endarkened” wisdom as a way to develop an Africana Studies approach to using critical race theory (CRT) to examine African American education. We find that Cynthia Dillard's (2000) use of the term endarkened is recognition of the power of words and their potential impact on our consciousness. By using this term, we intend to normalize and center blackness as the central construct through which we formulate our arguments regarding the necessity for developing a liberatory framework to understand Black education.
