Abstract
This paper explores available sales, rankings, and readership data for bestselling genre fiction in search of data correlations and relationships between trends and rankings from industry standard BookScan, market giant Amazon, and readersourced Goodreads. With these tools in hand, can publishers understand and assess the readership (and ultimately, the sales potential) of topselling and midlist genre fiction? Given the inconsistent nature of available data, there is no global conclusion to be made; however, this paper points to the expansion and development of alternative data sources as a necessity for the continued evolution of publishing in the digital age.
