Abstract

The assessment of building energy is a complex process and extremely difficult to measure; however, it has increasingly become one of the most important problems for practitioners and policymakers to resolve. Many energy usage studies offer different approaches and models, mainly focused on the early stages of the building design process. Although these can cover a wide range of industries, their scope is often limited to similar use analysis. In this research, we summarize different perspectives of scholars and industrial approaches in framing the building energy assessment. The objective of this study is to introduce an operations management technique that focuses on optimizing energy consumption and sustainability for buildings with different energy needs and use requirements. The paper presents a new model using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method, which follows a best practices approach. The model will help provide guidelines and recommendations to improve the energy efficiency of a building by looking at energy saving opportunities and energy management from a facilities management point of view.
