Abstract

Bioregional Inventory Originated Simulation Under Management (BioSum) is software from the US Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program. It is a complex analysis framework that models and evaluates forest management treatments across multi-decade timeframes. Originally written to work with Microsoft Access databases, BioSum is migrating to the use of SQLite as its database engine. The final module of BioSum, Treatment Optimizer, is the first one to be converted so the changes can be implemented incrementally. This practicum report outlines a workflow for converting the database engine of an existing program from Microsoft Access to SQLite with the example of the Treatment Optimizer module of BioSum. It touches on the database schema and SQL syntax differences between the two database engines, the coding environment used, the collaborative aspect of this kind of project, debugging, and documentation considerations. It also considers the future of BioSum and possible feature additions. This report could serve as a reference document for a beginning developer working on database migration within an existing project or for a BioSum user looking for insight into the coming changes.
