Abstract

This a capstone project developed by Team Ahmed for the Spring Semester 2024 (SS24). This web application showcases an interactive map, crafted using Leaflet—a leading open-source JavaScript library for mobile-friendly interactive maps. The data powering the map is sourced from OpenStreetMap, a collaborative project that creates a free, editable map of the world. The primary focus of this project is to provide an engaging and informative user experience through the interactive map. The map is designed to present content related to Jason Washington Commemoration, offering users detailed insights and visual representations of significant locations and events associated with the commemoration. The project's repository is a collection of the essential files that constitute the application's frontend. It includes HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. For those interested in exploring the project's technical details or contributing to its development, all the resources and documentation are available on the project's GitHub repository.

Initiated in 2024, the Jason Washington Memorial Archive for Justice is an ongoing project by student researchers in memory of Jason Washington (1973-2018) who was shot by Portland State University police. The mission of the archive is to document the life of Jason Washington, a Navy veteran and resident of the neighborhood, a postal worker, father, and husband. The project aims to foster teaching, research, and service to preserve Jason Washington’s memory and to advance activism for racial justice on campus and in the community.

The initial element of this archive is an interactive map to the memorials on campus dedicated to Jason. Research and technological work was done by students during the spring and summer terms of 2024. Other elements will be added to the archive either on this site or in hard copy in the PSU Special Collections Department starting in the spring of 2025.
