Abstract

Featuring 170 pages of prose, 16 comic-style pages, seven full color illustrations, and numerous black and white interior illustrations, Piles of Old Iron is an original fantasy story set in an imaginary world that faces a slow and inevitable decay. The intention of this project is to integrate illustrations into a novel to produce a work that uses the best attributes of both visual and literary storytelling to enhance the reader’s experience and tell a complete and compelling story. There is also an emphasis on a diversity of language and vocabulary that hopes to be challenging but contextually decipherable. Subversion of long-standing fantasy tropes is also a prime consideration.
