Abstract
Fragments of Struggle is a collection of five English translations of short stories by Kobayashi Takiji, the hero and martyr of prewar Japan's proletarian literary movement. The short works in this project showcase the breadth of Takiji's style, and bolster the argument that he may have been a much more complex, and experimental, writer than he is often given credit for. Furthermore, this collection may feature some of the first English translations of wall fiction (kabe shōsetsu), a sub-genre of the Japanese proletarian literary movement that thrived in the early 1930s.
