Description

Original bifacial leaf (pages 481[recto] and 482[verso]) from the 1896 Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer.

Extracted from a disbound copy of the Kelmscott Chaucer, originally printed in an edition of 425 copies on paper and 13 on vellum. Recto of leaf contains end of Book I of "Troilus and Criseyde"; verso begins "Liber Secundus." Woodcut illustration on verso depicts a medieval scene of Troilus on horseback approaching Criseyde, with elaborate floral borders.

Designed by William Morris; illustration designed by Edward Burne-Jones and engraved by W.H. Hooper; ornamental borders and initials designed by William Morris.
