Description

Are you interested in learning to present data in a visually compelling format? This presentation will explain and demonstrate the University of Oregon’s new textbook cost data visualizations. I will discuss how I used Microsoft Power BI to create data visualization reports using textbook cost data. Our textbook cost data is a simple dataset with some significant limitations, but Power BI has allowed us to use the data creatively and find important insights. I will present the finished reports, talk about the process of creating them, and share tips about getting started with data visualization from the perspective of a non-programmer with limited data management experience.

The textbook cost reports help the UO OER team identify high impact courses, calculate approximately how much students at UO are spending on textbooks, and the approximate student cost avoidance from no cost courses. We envision these reports being used by departmental leadership to set textbook affordability goals and being shared publicly to improve our transparency and promote the OER program.
