Abstract
This is a work of narrative nonfiction about the horticulturalists, entrepreneurs, and scientists who brought figs to California at the turn of the twentieth century, and the legacies they inadvertently left behind. The story focuses on George Christian Roeding, a nurseryman who paid a great personal cost in order to participate in one of history's most overlooked botanical heists.
