Abstract
Avi, an American writer, has published numerous best-selling books for children. The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle appeared in 1990: Avon Books, New York. The book has since been honored with seventeen awards for children's fiction.
Charlotte Doyle is a thirteen-year-old girl of wealth and good breeding. During the summer of 1832, en route from her British boarding school to her family's Rhode Island home, she finds herself the lone passenger and female on board a ship called the Seahawk sailing from Great Britain across the Atlantic Ocean. During the Ship's long and terrifying voyage, Charlotte is caught between a mutinous crew and the ship's charming and cultured captain, Captain Jaggery, a wolf in sheep's clothing. She bears witness to fierce uprisings, hurricanes, class and race struggles, sexism, and is even accused of murder. In the process, Charlotte also learns the meaning of redemption and true friendship. She returns to her family's home a year later no longer a sheltered child but an enlightened young woman who has grown rich in compassion, bravery, and free-spiritedness. Charlotte quickly realizes that she is unhappy being away from the sea and runs away to rejoin her true family and life on board the Seahawk.
