Abstract

This creative thesis contains poems arranged in two thematic parts. The first section, "Seaward," explores the world of commercial fishermen who work aboard enormous 365 foot factory trawlers in the Bering Sea. The content and language of this section depicts an adventurous and harsh environment, while the form of the poems creates a sense of waves heaving a boat up and down. The second section, "Landfall," deals primarily with experiences on land, ranging from forested landscapes of North America to desert landscapes of Mexico, from expressions of love for a mother to lamenting the death of a father. The form and language of the poems in this section are notably quieter and gentler, thus creating a sharp contrast to the dangerous world of commercial fishing. As the title indicates, both sections (and the poems contained therein) are the "way points" of a voyage.
