Abstract

The Drawing series presented in this thesis exhibition deals with the influence of a mother and child relationship. Beginning with pregnancy and following the physical relationship through the first year, these drawings reflect the changes of the interactions between the mother and the child as well as the mother and her environment.

The imagery is an abstract representation of this relationship. The intuitive process that is used to create this series, relies on formal elements of drawing which only suggest the influence of the mother and child relationship. It is the intuitive approach to these drawings that allows the emphasis of the content to be placed on the formal issues instead of a representational image of mother and child.

Formal elements like the weight, movement, and tension, of line, shape, form, color, and texture are the basis of the abstract nature of the images. The different types of relationships represented through the use of these formal elements are reflections of habits amassed in the artist formed by the relationships of mother and child.
