Abstract

Significant deficits in clinical preparedness for fluency disorders and computer literacy have been identified through research. A hypermedia program that teaches students how to identify moments of stuttering could address both clinical preparedness issues and computer literacy. It is the purpose of this study to investigate the validity of a hypermedia program as a training tool. Twenty-one college students were divided into 2 groups based on scores from a pre-training assessment task. Group A attended traditional classroom lectures to learn the skill of stuttering identification, whereas Group B used the hypermedia program. All participants were given a post-training video assessment task wherein they individually identified each syllable stuttered. Results of the comparison found no significant difference on post-training performances between the classroom group and the computer group. These findings indicate that the hypermedia program was at least as effective as traditional classroom instruction in training the skill of stuttering identification. Implications from this study include restructuring use of class time, employing hypermedia programs for both initial training and continuing education purposes, and identification of future areas of research.
