Abstract

This is a creative thesis on a personal experiences working for the European peace movement. It reflects the parallel efforts of working for personal and shared peace in order to contribute to both,

After several years as a reporter, I became disenchanted with my life choices and became an intern with the Catholic peace organization Pax Christi International in Belgium. It was a transition that proved both challenging and rewarding.

While I was discovering the physical peace work through Pax Christi I was also embarking on an inner journey to find personal peace with my decisions and myself.

This is presented as a creative thesis. I combined my journalistic training with my desire to develop travel articles and creative writing skills based on personal experience. The result is a series of journalist, travel, memoir and reflective essays. Most of the research was done through personal observation, and the essays are meant to give an intimate glimpse into the peace movement and life abroad.

The thesis is divided into four parts representing various aspects of my experiences. Part one consists of three chapters relating to both specific information about Pax Christi and Brussels, and my thoughts during this transition period.

Part two is reflective. It explains some of the physical and emotional obstacles that had to be dealt with. There were a variety of conflicts and the process was not always easy. Overcoming these challenges were crucial to my personal growth and my contribution to the peace movement.

Part three reflects a new awaking about Pax Christi and myself. I tried to emphasis the learning experiences that came from working in the peace movement, living abroad and facing new challenges.

Part four describes my final thoughts as the internship comes to a close. It reflects the growth, excitement and fear as I reflect on the previous year and look towards an unknown future.
