Abstract
As more variable renewable energy resources are connected to the grid, new challenges emerge for grid operators. Demand response programs can provide an additional degree of freedom to grid operators, by modulating the patterns of electricity consumption of residential, customer-owned, flexible loads. The success of demand response programs requires robust and reliable systems of communication between grid operators and flexible loads.
The ANSI/CTA-2045 communication protocol enables customer-owned devices to act as flexible loads. The SEP 2.0/IEEE 2030.5 communication protocol is used to manage distributed energy resources, including flexible loads. Interoperability can be realized by mapping ANSI/CTA-2045 and SEP 2.0/IEEE 2030.5 communication protocols to connect distributed energy resource management systems to flexible loads and realize the benefits of demand-side management.
ANSI/CTA-2045 provides requirements for flexible loads communicating with distributed energy resource management systems. These requirements, as well as the requirements of the distributed energy resource management system, inform the design of the communication protocol mapping. This manuscript designs SEP 2.0/IEEE 2030.5 resources that reflect the capabilities of ANSI/CTA-2045-conformant flexible loads, and communicate demand response actuations and device monitoring data between flexible loads and distributed energy resource management systems. These communications are modeled using sequence diagrams, providing a detailed picture of the communication protocol mapping.
