In 1968, Arthur Schlesinger, who had acted as Special Assistant to the President John F. Kennedy and advisor and speechwriter to numerous Democratic political campaigns, actively supported the presidential campaign of Robert F. Kennedy.

Schlesinger's address at Portland State College followed Kennedy's speech to faculty and students on March 26, 1968.
