Notes

Ferenc Nagy served as Prime Minister of Hungary from 1946 to 1947. He was unseated by Communist coup and granted asylum in the United States; he was the last non-Communist head of state in Hungary until the restoration of free elections in 1989. He published his account of his life and political career, The Struggle behind the Iron Curtain, in 1948.

Nagy lectured at various American universities during the 1960s. In this presentation at Portland State College, he discusses the shifting role of East Central Europe during the period of Soviet Communist domination, the nascent reform movement under Dubcek in Czechoslovakia, and the Soviet invasion of October 1968.

His lecture was introduced by Dr. Frank Munk, professor of political science at Portland State.

Transferred and preserved by Portland State University Library’s Special Collections with the generous support of the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Oregon State Library.
