Dr. Stephen Dow Beckham was interviewed on January 23, 2026, by Hui Rodomsky.
Biographical
Dr. Stephen Dow Beckham is Pamplin Professor Emeritus of History at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. He taught Pacific Northwest history and Indian law for over forty years at Lewis & Clark Law School. As an authority on Indian law, he has worked with 25 Native American tribes as a witness on cases involving treaty rights, land claims, boundaries, hydropower, and gaming litigation. He was appointed to the Oregon state commission on historic preservation by four governors before retiring as committee chairperson in 2025. Dr. Beckham continues to contribute his expertise on the history of the Oregon coast as a consultant to the DLCD on land use legislation.
Description
"People and the Land" is a collaboration between the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development and Portland State University. The goal of this project is to document and preserve a record of Oregon’s land use program through the recording, transcription, collection and archiving of personal oral histories.
