As part of the PSU Urban Design Collaborative, the School of Architecture hosted a series of urban design conversations in the Spring 2021 term. These conversations address the infrastructure of the public city, consciously addressing both the large-scale systems and ideas that organize cities as well as concrete, contemporary urban design problems and projects. The urban conversations place specific urban design concerns and projects in Portland in dialogue with other places and issues.
Since the 1970s, Portland has been an example of how the heart of the North American city could be reimagined. Over the past year, Portland has been used as a symbol in the national and international press as an urban example of supposed unruly protest, of devastated downtowns, and environmental catastrophe. This spring, we would like to talk about Portland, by putting the city in conversation with places beyond its urban growth boundary.
