The Portland NAACP Branch 1120 was founded in 1914. It is the oldest continuously chartered branch west of the Mississippi. Verdell and Otto Rutherford were active members of the NAACP, serving terms as Secretary and President, respectively, and founding the NAACP-associated local credit union which was based at one point, in their home. This section includes a small selection of NAACP related materials from the Rutherford Collection. For information on the full holdings of the collection, please see the finding aid.
