This album contains photographs and clippings spanning from the 1890s through the 1920s from the Verdell Burdine and Otto G. Rutherford Collection. The album originates from the Watson family of Portland, Oregon, relations of the Rutherford family through marriage, and came to the collection through a cousin, Benjamin Watson. Consisting primarily of portraits and snapshots, the album includes photographs of family, travel, recreation activities, social clubs, and events in the early twentieth century. The final pages of the album include newspaper clippings of social notes from the Portland African American community, including the Watson and Rutherford families. Album 2 in this collection also originates from the Watson family.

The collection contains photographs, newspapers, publications, and family history documents, as well as records for numerous community groups, African American civil rights organizations, women's clubs, fraternal orders, and churches in Oregon.
