Abstract

Errett Hummel was interviewed on September 27, 2000, by Alma Bingham, Rick Hardt, Maxine Thomas, and Barbara Wiegele.

Description

This interview is one of a series conducted by the School of Education History Preservation and Celebration Committee.

The committee was organized among Education faculty and staff by Dr. Ulrich Hardt, Education professor and associate dean, during his service as director of special projects for the School. The committee developed projects honoring the history of Education at PSU, including a record of significant accomplishments and milestones, a deans’ photo gallery, and this oral history project of interviews with past administrators, professors, and staff.

Dr. Hardt conducted some of the interviews along with committee members Alma Bingham, Steve Brannan, Maxine Thomas, and Barbara Wiegele. Hardt and Wiegele were also interview subjects along with Robert Everhart, Errett Hummel, Hal Jorgensen, Donald Leu, Ron Petrie, George Timmons, and David Willis. The interviews were recorded during the years 1999-2001 and describe the progress of PSU’s School of Education from its beginnings as an academic division without a dean to its organization as a School offering doctoral degrees in Education.

This interview was digitally transferred from audiocassette by PSU Library Special Collections and University Archives.

Biographical

Errett Hummel (1913-2006) joined the administration at Portland State College in 1950 as an assistant to President Jack Cramer. He also served as the chair of the Department of Education (later the School of Education and College of Education), taught school administration and finance, and was an educational consultant for the State of Oregon. During Hummel’s career, Portland State became a four-year degree-granting college in 1955, organized its Department of Education into a School, and attained university status in 1969, under continuous challenges from inter-university politics, leadership changes, and tight budgets. Hummel retired from PSU in 1976.
