Description
Wikipedia-editing assignments can help educators gain entrance to students’ most stubbornly guarded information behaviors and attitudes. By turning students’ critical attention toward Wikipedia—a resource they use regularly and successfully—educators can open conversations that go beyond the rigid and unconvincing prohibitions that students usually receive about the world’s largest and most open encyclopedia. Wikipedia is intellectually accessible in a way that makes it conducive for prompting students to explore, contemplate, and discuss broader information literacy skills. Asking students to explore, critique, and edit Wikipedia takes this engagement even further. This presentation will offer theoretical perspectives for situating Wikipedia in the classroom, suggest practical teaching approaches and applications, and report preliminary research findings.
